Introduce
I hope that you enjoyed my last hub about this game. My previous hub was multiplayer themed. Now I want to invade single player gaming ;-) In this hub, I will show you few ways of getting money in Mount & Blade single player game.
Looting Pool
Many Players think that Looting is most profitable way of earning cash in Mount & Blade. Can you agree with it?
See results without votingTips:
#1 If you do not feel so strong to attack caravans, you can try to get toll for passing.
#2 You must remember that, If you will chase caravans, you are outlawed. Some lords can chase you. The same situation will be if you try to rob peasants of another lord.
Looting
Earning Money by getting loot isn’t “thinking requiring” method of getting cash. You just recruit some peasants or hire mercenaries in purpose of fighting. If you are well-armed, it is time for chase and hunting some weak parties or trading caravans. You must use your leadership mind to minimize your looses because loot (in money, weapons or trading goods) must be greater than your outgoings (like upkeeping the band, training peasants or recruiting new soldiers).
You can get loot from two sources: servants of enemy kingdoms (armies, scouts or caravans) or wandering bandits.
Ransoms
Another way of earning money in Mount & Blade is ransoming. This way is similar to fighting for loot (described in previous paragraph) but it there is one difference. If you will use blunt weapon (like hammers, morningstars) you will not kill the enemy – you will take him alive as a prisoner.
Ok, we got some prisoners. What now? You can sell them to the Ransom Broker.
He will pay you for every captured prisoner 50-150 gold coins. Amount of earned gold depends of prisoner. Peasant cannot pay so big ransom as a nobleman or king.
Remember that quantity of prisoner you can catch is depended of your “Prisoner management” skill. In Native (unmoded Mount & Blade) it is 5 prisoners per one point but there are some mod which are changing this value.
Trading
My Mount & Blade character is peaceful and merchant-shaped Knight, so trading is my favourite way of getting money in this game. There is no deeper philosophy: you must buy cheap goods and sell it with profits. This hub will help you to do it ;-) If you want to be good tradesman, you must know few interesting things. There are some important factors which has influence on your profits.
Trading Skill – If you (or some of NPC you hired) have high trading skill, you are earning more money during trading. Other tradesman and towns will pay you higher prices etc. How to check yout trading skill? Press "C" button and enter into your character review, statistics etc. I marked a trade skill by red color.
Tips
#4 You can improve the relations with cities and village by completing quests.
#5 Information about your relationship with settlement is presented when you arrive the city.
#6 Villages are little strange. Some goods are very appreciated and some are very depreciated in it. I think that this is not very logical but we can use it in business purpose.
#7 If destination is to far, it is good idea to press ctrl + space to boost a game time. But remember that this will make game so fast and you can missed enemies! If you want to use this tip, you must be sure that you got strong company before.
Relations with cities and villages are another factor which is shaping prizes you can face in Mount & Blade. If your relations with the settlement is higher, prices will be more attractive. You will can sell more expensive and buy cheaper than usual.
By this reason, it is good idea to complete quests for settlements you want to trade in. Ask the local guild master - may he need help in something? Completing the quests will improve your relations and will give you a chance to earn some cash by the way.
How to trade? You must check the prizes on the market first.
Checking the prices in Town is action that helps you explore market finding appreciated and depreciated goods. You must go to the market place and click "acces the local prices" option. It is marked on the screenshot you can see on the right.
You will be reported about prizes on the market. The trading skill is very helpful here because it make this process faster and more effective – you will find more offers.
If you notice good offer, you must just realize it. Buy cheap goods, travel to selected city and sell goods with profit. Your goods and money need protection of course, because you can be robbed on the way.
Remember that if you are buying many of single good, its price is going up! In the second hand, selling many units of single good will be a purpose of price's falling.
Tips
#7 Tournaments are not 100% random events! From time to time Kingdoms are making Tournaments to honor finished peace negotiation with another Kingdom.
#8 If you want to get max prize in tourney, you must bet 600 gold coins on yourself.
Tourney
From time to time, you will arrive in a City which is organizing tourney. Tourney is 6 tiers of fighting. You can take a deal in it and bet cash on yourself. More cash you bet, more cash you earn. If you will win the tourney you can win even few thousands gold coins! Winning the tournaments brings you a chance to rise your renown in the Kingdom.
Arena Fighting
It is not very profitable source of money but I feel obliged to describe it. Arena fighting has simple rules. You must defeat 36 enemies. If you will do it, you will earn 200 gold coins. If you will fail – may you will get few coins for solace. Or may not – it depends of count of defeated enemies.
Business
You can establish your own business in this game! The system is easy. You must have few things to establish own business like bakery or smith:
- + 1 or higher relations with the City Owner (Lord, King etc).
- Cash – 2000 – 12000 gold coins for tenure of land and buildings.
What about business profits? Profits are connected with prizes of goods and economical condition of the city and even policy. If you want to learn something about this, click first option marked on the screen by red color with number 1
If you are ready, you must go to the guild master and choose “I wish to buy land in this town for a productive enterprise” option. I mean option marked on the screen by red color with number 2.
Dupery
There is another way of getting money. It is good to do it on the first steps when you do not have a cash to invest in band, trading or business ;) If you want to make some cash by this unhonorable way, you must find a King or Noble/Naive Lord who will give you one of the following quest:
- Take the taxes from his village or city.
- Retake the debt of another lord.
If he will order you to tax the village, you must ride to it, declare that you are the tax collector, take the cash and…go to the another side of Calradia ;-). You must avoid Lord who deputed you this quest because he will not forgive you.
If Naive Nobleman ordered you to retake the debt of another lord, you must find this lord and force/persuade him to give the cash back. Mechanism is the same as above – you can give cash back to owner or hide out in another country praising the Gods for that you will never cross patch of your creditor…
Peacemaker
Being diplomat and peacemaker is noble way of getting rich, but it is not very easy.
You can go to the guild master of city involved into war and ask him for quest. If you are famous Knight or something like that, he can ask you for make peace.
The Peacemaker quest looks like that: There are two lords (in opposite countries) who are specially engaged in the war. They are main spot of altercation. You must found them and bribe or defeat them on the battlefield.
If you want to pay them, you must have something about 8000 gold coins (one will take something about 2000 and the second one something about 6000). Reward of this quest is 12000 gold coins.
If one, or both, lords are your friend, you can persuade him without paying a cash. You can use your charisma and persuade skill to but…is there any gamer who raised persuade skill?
Tips
#9 Upkeeping the city/castle garrison is 50% of "normal" army upkeep.
Income from fiefs.
If you are good servant of your King (or you are King), you will be rewarded by Noble title and fief which gives you some profits.
- Ownership of village gives you something around 400 gold coins per week.
- Ownership of castle gives you something around 100-300 gold coins per week.
- Ownership of town gives you something around 1000 gold coins per week.
You must remember that economical condition of fief has an influence on your profits. If you are upkeeping army or city guard (for fief protection), their upkeep will eat some of earnings.
Tips
#10 This quest can be given only by Guild Master.
Ransom Quest
From time to time, you can face the quest of rescuing merchant’s daughter who was kidnapped by bandits. Guild master will give you something about 600 gold for ransom. You must meet the bandits in the presented place and (1) rescue the girl by defeating the bandits or (2) paying the ransom and taking girl to her father.
Reward in this quest isn't big but if you choose option (1) you can get cash you got on ransom, loot from the bandits and reward from the Guild Master.
Being Errand boy
You can deliver the letters from one lord to another lord for 30 gold. It is not good job – even on the start of gameplay.
Bounty Hunter
There is possibility for that another lord will rent you to find and kill wanted murderer for 300 gold. I think that this is not the best way but if someone is in despair…
By the way, Guild Masters in towns like to give bounty for wandering bandits band.
There is possibility to found bandits hideout. If you will "clear it", you can get good loot. It is good idea to looking for those hideouts. If you found one, run to lord who will give you quest to defeat bandits. You will got double reward. One for quest and one for hideout.

Tips
#11 Remember that villagers can take the pitchfork and rush on you!
#12 Plundering the village requires all day – you can be attacked by enemy reinforcements.
Hostiles against villages
Villages are good source of money – if you are bad guy. There are three unhonorable way to get cash from the poor villagers.
- Stealing the goods from the villages.
- Taking cows out (can be sold)
- Looting and plundering the village (prosperity of village will fall to zero and you got big loot).
Loot in all three ways is depended of economical condition of the village.
It is good for rouges and other ones who are bad guys... I do not like it but I must say that this is profitable - to the time you will face enemy reinforcements.
If you will be bored being bad guy you can become…
Noble Knight rescuing the villagers.
From time to time, you can ride into village which will be infested by bandits. You will have choice to help the villagers (by rushing on the bandits) or moving away. If you will rescue the village, Elder will want to reward you by goods. If you will take it – you will be richer. If you will refused – you will get good bonus to relations with this village. The choice is yours.
